I hope to learn to use the manual settings on my Canon Rebel digital SLR. I have always been a "point and shoot" kind of girl and I would love to be able to do more with my camera.
I am David and I am happy to be taking part in the next 12 weeks. I got into photography about 10 years ago when I had the chance to spend 3 weeks on safari in Africa. I bought my first camera a couple of months before the trip and was sorely disappointed the results of the trip. I had less than 50 (out of 875) photos that I thought were good. Since then I have moved to digital and shoot with both a SLR (Nikon D300) and a point and shoot (Nikon P6000).
My skills have progressed and I can shoot fairly decent landscapes and still life shots. I however mostly suck at people shots and want to get better.
As per this weeks assignment I have posted my like and dislike to my Flikr account....
After reviewing my post I noticed that the URL I used for the photos do not allow you to see my comments (my reasons for like and dislike) so here is my full Flickr address http://www.flickr.com/photos/pileadave/
Hey Erich...I am hoping to learn much more about my manual settings as well as about lighting. I am an amateur but would like to get into portrait photography.
thanks!
I'm Pat. I've been interested in photography for quite a while but have only been working at getting better for the past couple of years. I have a Canon RebelXT with the stock 18-55mm zoom lens and a 75-300mm zoom lens. I also just picked up an external flash unit, so one more thing to learn how to use.
I feel my biggest weaknesses are composition and just being able to see the world creatively, which I guess is all part of composition isn't it.
Thanks Eric, in terms of composition I was very limited as to where I could actually set up to get a decent shot. The river didn't really have much of a bank to it and I could only find one little spot that I could climb down to and set up my tripod, I guess I was lucky that that one spot allowed for a good composition.
My settings for this show were as follows (for anyone who is curious):
18-55mm zoom lens at 24mm
f/22 for 10 seconds
ISO 100
(and a tripod of course)
I would like to make better use of my camera and learn what all the terms mean. It's kinda hard to read the user guide when I have no idea what they are talking about.
Thanks for all of your posts so far! A few of you found that your comments here didn't automatically appear -- I believe I have fixed that problem!
I hope you've all taken the time to look at the various links people have posted. If you have, you've seen some images with great composition and some others that might benefit from alterative approaches. There are also some common challenges with lighting -- some of which can be more easily addressed than others.
In case you're wondering, the point of this week is to get us started thinking about what makes a good image and to start interacting with each other. Curious how somebody achieved an effect? Have questions? Feel free to ask and discuss!
Thanks Kim... I was trying to convey a sense of entanglement with the image. It might convey a bit of that but i don't feel there is a focus to the composition.
I recently started taking a lot of photos and was looking for an affordable way to improve. Really i just want to get more good pics from a day than bad.
I will post some pics later today hope to get some feed back.
This is my Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/amorra1/ take a look and let me know what you think. I pretty much like all of these but i know some could use a little work.
I've always loved taking pictures, especially nature, both closeups and landscapes. With 3 kids, there's been a gradual shifting towards taking pictures of them and their various activities, often so challenging for a phototgrapher. I'm on a photographic journey: always looking for ways to improve, get a great picture and not just a snapshot.
Got lots of pics to share but have to figure out how to show them to all.
Eric, would it be easy to set up an account on Flicker for us all to post our pics to? Would be easier to go thorugh them and comment, I think but not sure.
What I don't like is that I can't get all the people with the same clarity in group shots - why can't everyone be the same?
Also in the two of Trevor in St. John's - one he is clear, harbour in behind is not, and the other is the opposite. How can I get both him and the background in crystal clear focus?
Is it fair to assume you are shooting in full automatic mode? What it looks like to me is like you are shooting with a very low aperture setting. If you use the portrait setting on I'd say just about any camera, it sets the aperture as low as it can get to get a good exposure. It does this on purpose because usually if you are shooting a portrait you want the background to be blurry so that your portrait subject is the only focal point in the photo.
The best way to combat this on a bright and sunny day, the type of day you were shooting those photos, and you want to shoot in an automatic mode, shoot on the landscape setting. The camera will set to the highest aperture setting it can and you'll get a greater depth of field.
I'm sure Eric will be covering depth of field and aperture settings in one of our lessons.
Hey Montse - I also asked Eric if it would help if a Facebook group was set up for same reasons you mentioned - easier to share photos and comment in one place? Flickr sounds good too.
Hi Eric, Sorry for the late entry. I'm not looking for anything in particular from this course other than a general improvement in all my photography efforts.
Hi, I'm Dani. *waves to friends* I've rediscovered my passion for photography in a huge way this year, largely because I'm doing a 365 project - a photo each day for a year. The more I learn, the more I see I have to learn!
I'm looking forward to some group therapy, both receiving criticism and learning through others. Thanks for the opportunity and sorry I'm late -- as usual!

I too am late in introducing myself. My name is Anna aka.BeachMama. I have been a photographer since I was 12 but, only this past year have started making it my business instead of just my passion.
I hope to learn a few tips from Eric as he has always had a few to share and get feedback on some of my photos to see where they can be improved.
My photography blog and site is here: www.annaeppphotography.com
I too would like to suggest a flickr photo group, would be easier for us all to submit and get comments on our submissions. Since we have to upload our photos somewhere anyway.
Such a late entry as well, I hope to get a better basic understanding of my camera- gotta run, more assignments to catch up on, has been a busy past couple of weeks!
I am starting late but hoping this is where I jump in. I have become interested in photography as my kids have gotten older and as I have become more involved in blogging. I purchased my first DSLR this past year and have struggled to learn how to use the manual settings on my own. I am just looking to broaden my horizions and learn from everyone else.
Greetings all. Am a bit behind, but catching up over the next few days. Been interested in photography for many years. I have been using a Nikon D80 for the last couple of years. Canon Powershot G-series before that going back to about 2000.
Hi everyone! I'm Leanne. I'm 20 years old, and although i've always liked photography I never really got into it a whole lot until this year. I mostly use a Canon Powershot SD1100. It's an amazing point and shoot, but I can't wait to get a DSLR someday :)
I also have a Fuji film camera (a Fujica STX-1), which I've taken a few photos with, but really would like to learn more about photography in general before I try again.
Hello! I bought a Nikon D-40 about 2 years ago. I took a course with the city (I won't tell you which one)and was very disappointed. We didn't take any pictures at all. The first day the teacher gave us graphics with numbers. I really don't have a mathematical intelligence. Before taking the course I was taking good pictures in an instinctive way but after the course my pictures started to suck. Anyways, I hope that with this course it will be more simple. Hopefully more people will join also. I will upload some pictures later this week.
Hi Anita, and welcome! I hope you find this more useful and fun! There is some technical content, but I've tried to keep it as practical as possible. If you have any questions, just yell, and please feel free to invite your friends -- the more the merrier!
hello everyone, my goal is two fold, first to take better pictures as in tack sharp and better colors then i can concentrate on better composition, second is to learn how to use the manual settings which semms to be so important.i used to use a canon 35 mm and the majority of my pics were pretty good but again i was always on automatic setting but i cant seem to take great pics with my dslr, i agree with Eric's saying "its not what you use but how you use it" so i wont blame it all on the camera. i think this website will help both me and my daughter whom i believe will also join your group.
thanks
Welcome! Olympus makes great equipment with accurate colour - you shouldn't have any problems there! However, unlike some other brands, they don't artificially pump up their saturation -- so they may not be as vibrant as you're used to seeing. I'd personally rather have the camera record accurate colours and then tweak the saturation in post.
For sharpness, you'll want to pay close attention to the depth of field and exposure material. Just yell if you have any questions!
Tonight's my first night, and I'm super stoked! Can't wait to get started. I've decided to join simply because I want to take my photos to the next step. I envision these great pics in my mind, but when I hit the shutter and review my photo.. they only, half the time, come out as I envisioned. I also seems to like taking Wildlife, Landscapes, and Children.. however the wildlife and children seem to pose problems for me.. the never stay still long enough for me to get my act together and hit the shutter button :) I often feel frustrated about the quality ( I aim for TACK SHARP ), lack of "feeling" in my pictures cause I'm so hung up about what ISO, what apeture, what setting am I on.. and when my photo ends up 'sucking' I get discouraged. I want pro styled shots..NOW!! LOL
Can't wait to get started. Feel free to provide neg feedback on my pics if you think your suggestion might actually help me.. thats why I'm hear.. to learn and grow.
Heres a link to my Week 1 assignment.. I've added the photos I like, first and followed with the ones I'm frustrated with the outcome last.. I've made comments to each photo with my likes and dislikes..Here goes!
Hi Tracy, and welcome! Don't get discouraged -- you have some great images. I left a few comments on photobucket -- don't hesitate if you have any questions!
just a quick question,as i said in my introduction, im not used to using webpages like flicker or facebook and that my daughter(who's user name is tracy) would probably join as well. i have seen her pics that she sent to photobucket and your reply that you had left some comments but i cannot see any of your comments on her photobucket album,
what im i doing wrong ?
Welcome to week one. Any questions? What do you hope to get out of this program?
I hope to learn to use the manual settings on my Canon Rebel digital SLR. I have always been a "point and shoot" kind of girl and I would love to be able to do more with my camera.

Thanks Eric, in terms of composition I was very limited as to where I could actually set up to get a decent shot. Lini..I love that picture you posted! The colors are so vibrant!! and the fact that you only see her lower body leaves so much to imagine!!
pat...your image of Sarah's Bridge is beautiful! definitely an ethereal feel to it
Thanks Kim, if you are at all curious these are the settings I shot that photo with:
I used my 18-55 zoom lens, set to 24mm
shutter speed was 10seconds
aperture was f/22
and the ISO was 100
(and I used a tripod, obviously with such a long shutter speed).
Dave..the one you dislike..I actually quite like...the sun in the corner..and the trees void of leaves...gives a lonely quiet feeling.
Thanks Kim... I was trying to convey a sense of entanglement with the image. It might convey a bit of that but i don't feel there is a focus to the composition.

Hi Nancy,
Is it fair to assume you are shooting in full automatic mode?
Hope that helps.

hello everyone, my goal is two fold, first to take better pictures as in tack sharp and better colors then i can concentrate on better composition, second is to learn how to use the manual settings which semms to be so important.i used to use a canon 35 mm and the majority of my pics were pretty good but again i was always on automatic setting but i cant seem to take great pics with my dslr, i agree with Eric's saying "its not what you use but how you use it" so i wont blame it all on the camera. i think this website will help both me and my daughter whom i believe will also join your group.
thanks
Hi Everyone,
Tonight's my first night, and I'm super stoked!
